Humboldt Area: Activities to Do!

Being in a small town I hear all the time, “I’m sooooo bored! There’s nothing to do here!” When actually within a half hour driving distance there is quite a lot to do for a reasonable price!

Shopping

First of all, there’s this really cool boutique in Humboldt on Main Street called Even in the Midwest that you could check out when you are bored. Our style is more country-chic. We love to be stylish, but also practical to all the country women in the area. Whether you are doing chores, going hunting, or meeting up with friends and family, we have styles for you! It’s not all trends. We like to have basic pieces that you can continue to use over and over in your wardrobe as well. We are always getting new outfits in and love it when people come in just to chat!

There are also two other boutiques in the Humboldt/Hartford (which is 8 miles to the east) area! One is called Prairie Boutique. They are mostly based online, but do host open houses quite often. They have such a cute, boho style with some added professional wear in them. Here is their website.

Hartford also just opened a boutique and screen print shop on Main Street! Modish Designs & Boutique has some cute styles, but what we love most about them is the customization piece they bring. Check out their website.

If you like more crafts and things there is the cutest shop called Knotty Gnome Variety & Salvage. The owners are so nice and really care about creating meaningful items out of people’s “junk”. Have a look at their website here, and also check out this blog post we did about them back in January!

Restaurants

Also, there’s the Humboldt Main Street Bar. The pizza there is stinking delicious and there is always some sort of night entertainment going on there. Between karaoke, live bands, darts, bean bag tournaments, sand volley ball tournaments; there is something going on year-round. Check it out!

If you don’t want “bar food” there is a delicious restaurant in Humboldt also called Big J’s Roadhouse. They have the best smoked food this side of the state! It is a family owned and operated business, and they have such a great hometown and friendly feel. They also have live music at time, but are focused more on being a great location for families. Check them out here.

In Hartford there are quite a few restaurants to check out with my favorite being the Hartford Steakhouse. The menu is super limited, but Friday and Saturday nights are Prime Rib nights. The flavor is delicious and the servers are super friendly and make you feel right at home.

Entertainment

Being on the east side of South Dakota, you have to go see the Falls Park waterfalls. Not only are they gorgeous and provide a great backdrop for next year’s family Christmas card; it’s such a fun and relaxing place to be! You can walk up and down along the river on both side to get the full view of them. There is a gift shop and you can also go up in what I like to call the “watch tower”. Day, night, winter, or summer the falls have beautiful light displays set up and are just waiting to be seen! Here is a link to the Falls Park website.

There is also a cafe along the Sioux River. While you are visiting the falls, stop in and grab a beverage or have something to eat!

Everyone needs to go try out the Buffalo Ridge Brewing Company! They just build the coolest – looking place on Main Street in Hartford. Not to mention, delicious beer! They have some great entertainment ideas! Check out their website here.

Even in the winter, South Dakota offers some great entertainment. Great Bear Recreation Park is a great place for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing! They have beginner runs, and also a little more advanced runs as well. My favorite thing about Great Bear is that they have a lodge. My friends are adventurous and love being outside, playing in the snow… all that jazz. I on the other hand do not at all enjoy any of that. The lodge has great hot chocolate and food! It also allows for the perfect viewing area for those embarrassing video and photos of your friends out on the slopes. You’re welcome, friends! 😉

A year-round destination for visitors is the Butterfly House & Aquarium at Sertoma Park. It is so much fun! You can have butterflies land on you and be up and personal with birds. It’s also interesting to learn about the different types of butterflies and fish. It’s a great educational tool and you can spend quite a bit of time there. Check out their website.

Although there are so many more options in the area such as lakes to go fishing at, Skyzone trampoline fun center, and tons of parks and gardens, I need to stop there or you will be here all day. For some more resources to find what sounds interesting to you go ahead and visit Visit Sioux Falls website, and the Hartford, SD website.

What are your favorite activities to do around your hometown? I would love to know!

XOXO,
