How to: Layering 101

My favorite questions that we get in the boutique all the time are, “How do I wear these items together? How do you create such cute outfits?!”

Well, we are here to tell you that it is not too difficult to figure out how to put different pieces together. Once you start getting used to it, pairing pieces of clothing becomes second nature!

I always like to start with a solid, neutral color to make things a little easier. When you get more experienced in layering, mixing patterns adds a little extra fun to your outfits. In this example, I used our gray thermal top. It is long sleeve and has a little bit of texture to it, but it is a solid gray.

In the picture above, I was extremely cold that day so for the first look I decided to wear our Hunter Green Plaid top. Any plaid pattern would look good on top of the gray piece. The plaid pattern is so fun and gives the outfit more of a “winter feel,” which is what I was looking for that day. I chose this particular shirt because of the fleece lining on the inside. There is no lining in the arms, so it doesn’t get too hot but is still extremely comfortable!

The next piece I chose to pair this thermal top with is the camel colored quilted puffer vest. It is so easy to just throw on the vest while running errands. It keeps you warm enough when running out in the cold South Dakota air, but also cool enough when you’re running around the grocery store looking for supper. Even though I paired the gray with the camel color, the black puffer vest would also look really good on top of this knit top.

A duster cardigan is one of the easiest things to pair over solid tops. The length adds dimension to your outfit without you having to try too hard! It also adds a layer of extra warmth in the winter. Plus, duster cardigans are just fun to wear! Add in a scarf over the whole outfit and BAM! Instant classy-looking combination.

The last idea I have for you, for layering is to add in a scarf. I added a plaid blanket scarf for extra warmth and texture in my outfit. The red brings out a little color in the otherwise neutral outfit. I also paired it with the black puffer vest for some extra warmth that day!

What is your favorite way to layer clothes? Another way that I didn’t take any picture of, is using statement jewelry with a plain top. A big, fun necklace and earrings would dress up and make any solid top pop!
